The Smartest Investment in Your Coaching Career: FSI Conference on High Performance in Football

The coaching game is always evolving. New research, new technology, and new ways of doing things pop up every year. Staying ahead isn’t just about working harder—it’s about working smarter. And that means investing in your professional development the right way.

I’m old enough to remember photocopying articles from the few journals available in the university library and mailing off cheques for books that took months to arrive from overseas. Those were the days when access to quality information was limited, and you had to really work for it.

These days, things couldn’t be more different. We’ve got an overwhelming amount of information at our fingertips. The problem? Not all of it is good. Too many young practitioners get caught in the social media vortex, chasing trends they see in 60-second clips with little understanding of the science or rationale behind them.

Focus on High-Value Resources

If you’re serious about coaching, you need to be strategic about where you get your information. You can’t afford to waste time on noise. Instead, focus on proven, high-value sources backed by real-world results.

One of the best resources I’ve come across is the Football Science Institute (FSI). They offer an incredible library of training and performance content from some of the top practitioners in football. More importantly, their insights come from those who have actually been in the trenches at the highest level of the game.

The team at FSI is led by Bernardo Requena, who has an impressive track record:

  • Fitness coach for Sevilla FC's first team (2004 & 2005 seasons)

  • Fitness coach for Athletic Club's first team (2008-2010)

  • Head of physical preparation at Real Madrid (2014-2017)

I recently had the chance to spend some time with Bernardo, and despite working in different sports, we found a lot of common ground. The challenges of high-performance training, injury prevention, and athlete development are universal. The right strategies transcend individual sports.

The Event You Can’t Miss

If you’re looking to level up your knowledge and connect with some of the best minds in the industry, I highly recommend checking out the FSI Conference on High Performance in Football.

It’s happening both in person and online, making it easily accessible no matter where you are. With a few details still to finalize, I’m excited to say that I’ll be speaking at the conference, specifically on injury rehabilitation and the return-to-run process—a crucial area that often gets overlooked.

This is the kind of event that can shift your entire approach to coaching. If you’re serious about being the best in your field, don’t miss it.

With a few logistics to be finalised I am looking forward to speaking at the conference and sharing our work specifically in injury rehabilitation and the array of information available to enhance the return to run and return to sport process.

The best coaches don’t just rely on experience—they actively seek out the best knowledge available. Don’t get stuck in the endless scroll of social media trends. Find resources that are backed by science and proven in the field. If you’re looking for one of the best, start with FSI.

See you at the conference!
